Remote MCP server samples for Azure Functions
This repo shows how to build a remote MCP server on Azure Functions with Python. The samples cover MCP tools, resources, prompts, and a demo app, and the infrastructure files let you deploy the server to Azure with `azd up`. It also includes local development support through VS Code, a dev container, and Azure Functions tooling, so you can test the server before deploying it.

What it does
MCP tool sample
`src/FunctionsMcpTool` shows tool endpoints for snippet CRUD, QR code generation, structured metadata, and batch operations.
MCP resource sample
`src/FunctionsMcpResources` shows resource templates and a server info resource.
MCP prompt sample
`src/FunctionsMcpPrompts` shows prompts for code review checklists, content summaries, and doc generation.
Weather app demo
`src/McpWeatherApp` is a sample MCP app with an interactive UI.
Azure deployment infrastructure
`infra/main.bicep` and `infra/main.parameters.json` define the Azure resources needed for deployment.
Local development setup
`.devcontainer` and `.vscode` files support running, debugging, and working in Codespaces or VS Code.

Getting Started with Remote MCP Servers using Azure Functions (Python)
This repo has a collection of samples to help you easily build and deploy a custom remote MCP server to the cloud using Azure Functions. You can clone/restore/run on your local machine with debugging, and azd up to have a server in the cloud in a couple minutes.
All sample MCP servers are configured with built-in authentication using Microsoft Entra as the identity provider.
You can also use API Management to secure the server, as well as network isolation using VNET.
If you're looking for samples in more languages check out the .NET/C# and Node.js/TypeScript versions.
Prerequisites
- Python version 3.13 or higher
- Azure Functions Core Tools >=
4.8.0 - Azure Developer CLI 1.23.x or above (for deployment)
- Docker (for the Azurite storage emulator)
- Visual Studio Code (recommended)
- Azure Functions extension
